You don't have to have a music degree or even know how to read music to sing with the KVU. If you, or anyone you know, are interested in performing with the KVU, please use the contact form and we'll get back with you right away. Or feel free to visit any of our rehearsals (consult the Calendar page for rehearsal dates and location).
The Kentucky Vocal Union is a group committed to the highest level of individual and ensemble vocal music performance. We strive for continuous improvement as individual performers and for perfection as an ensemble. Kentucky Vocal Union members are all committed to these same performance goals and desires.
We rehearse at a high level of intensity and commitment every week throughout the year. Members are expected to integrate KVU with their other commitments, to devote sufficient time and energy to our goals.
The ensemble is primarily a hobby/competition group that has had notoriety singing and performing in an inovative way. We expect to have regular important performances throughout the year and become an increasing asset to our local community. The Kentucky Vocal Union has often competed in the Barbershop Harmony Society district and international competitions and those opportunities figure importantly into our future goals.
AUDITION INFORMATION
The standard KVU audition is a "live" audition process and is outlined below. However, on occasion, alternative options for auditoning are offered to accomodate for timelines/deadlines and other chorus needs.
All auditions include the following 5 basic portions:
Pre Audition - At your first meeting, a music team member will access your basic vocal quality, range, and general singing skill level.
Initial Interview - You will speak with our director or performance team member(s) about our philosophy and expectations. You may then be given access to our audition materials. (possibly at the first meeting but no later than the second)
Visual Audition - You will learn the beginning portion of the choreography plan for Since I Don't Have You. You will review the moves and then perform them along side other members. The youtube link to the learning video is at https://youtu.be/HW8pJzWdJFs (at meeting 3 or 4 after receiving audition materials)
Music Audition - You will memorize Since I Don't Have You up to measure 30 and perform it in a quartet with another member also singing your part. You'll then sing and perform on your part with the quartet. This final step in the performance audition is done in front of the evaluation team. (at meeting 3 or 4 after receiving audition materials)
Post Audition Interview and Approval - Immediately after the music audition the performance team will review it with you. After the music/performance team has had sufficient time to consider your audition, they will make a recomendation to our board of officers. If the board votes to approve your membership, you will have the rights and responsibilities of a full member including access to all current learning materials.
